Interviewed on March 26 and May 7, 2021 The interview describes the career of Ginger Evans, who began her career in aviation in 1986 as Associate Director of Aviation and Chief of New Airport Construction at Stapleton International Airport and Denver International Airport and was promoted to Director; she later became the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation from 2015 to 2018 and has also worked with consulting firms for airport engineering and management; growing up in southeastern Colorado; importance of aviation to that part of the United States; education as a civil engineer; work prior to career at Stapleton Airport in Denver and Denver International Airport (DIA); airport engineering projects, including runway design and construction in both Denver and Chicago; partnerships and financing of airport construction projects; environmental initiatives at Stapleton and DIA; promotion to Director of Aviation in Denver; overseeing transition from Stapleton to DIA; work as an engineering consultant for various international airports; leadership at Chicago O’Hare and Midway and expansion projects there; work with an airport design, construction, and financing firm; role of these firms in the airport ecosystem; changes in airport design and engineering; challenges generated by both the September 11 terrorist attacks and the 2019 COVID crisis; leadership roles in airport management; observations of prejudice, discrimination, and sexual harassment, as well as experiences and observations of sexism; description of some individuals in the industry.
